The Discussion of Community Language Learning

This method takes its principles from the more general counseling learning approach developed by Charles A. Curran, believed that away to deal with the fears of students is for teachers to become ‘Language Counselor”. A language counselor means someone who is a skillful understander of the struggle students’ face in learning another language. Teachers must be understanding their students and being sensitive to them because this feeling can give students’ positive energy. Besides that, in this method advises teachers to consider their students as ‘whole persons’ that means not only their students’ intellect but also have understanding of relationship to the students.
The goals of this method are for students to learn how to use the target language communicatively as whole persons, valuing both thoughts and feelings.
The teacher’s initial role is primarily that of a counselor, he/she recognizes how threatening a new situation and focuses not only the language but also on being supportive of learners in their learning process.
According to Curran, there are six elements necessary for no defensive learning. First is security, second is aggression, third is attention, fourth is reflection, fifth is retention, and the last is discrimination.
The most important skills are understanding and speaking the language at the beginning, so learning is started by reading and writing. If students make the errors, the teacher will repeat correctly what the students have said incorrectly.

The Principles:
1. Teacher must build a relationship with their students.
2. Students learn non-defensively when they feel secure.
3. Language is for communication.
4. The student’s learning is facilitated, also interaction among students rather than from students to teacher.
5. The teacher should be sensitive to students.
6. Students feel more secure when they know the limits of an activity and they understand everything.
7. Teacher and students are whole persons.
8. Guided by the knowledge that each learners is unique.
9. The teacher ‘counsels’ the students.
10. The students’ native language is used to make meaning clear.
11. The teacher takes the responsibility for clearly structuring activities in the most appropriate way.
12. Learning at the beginning is facilitated.
13. The teacher encourages students’ initiative and independence.
14. Students need quite reflection time in order to learn.
